Peoples Geography — Reclaiming space

Creating people's geographies

Edward Said and Rashid Khalidi

In honour of Palestine Land Day a couple of days ago on March 30th, two terrific addresses by the late, great Edward Said and the first Edward Said Chair of Arab Studies at Columbia University, Rashid Khalidi.

Listening to Said’s excellent address reminded me of how much he is missed on the intellectual landscape since his passing in 2003 and how much he has influenced and inspired many scholars in a range of social science disciplines. Fortunately, he is succeeded by many great Palestinian and Arab intellectuals such as American-born Rashid Khalidi, and America is fortunate to have had them both. If you are able to listen to one, my pick is the first.

Edward Said in 2003 on Palestine, Iraq and U.S. Policy
University of Washington (99 mins)

Rashid Khalidi in 2006 on the Iron Cage: The Story of Palestinian Struggle for Statehood
World Affairs Council, San Francisco (60 mins)

Thank you for Edward Said’s video. He’s the one who interested me in Nietzsche’s work.

Your blog is a very dense source of information. Thank you for your efforts. That goes for you too, Homey.

Glad to hear it was Said that got you interested in Nietzsche, fancy that.

My pleasure, and I agree, Homie’s efforts are terrific.

Timely Reminders

"Those who crusade, not for God in themselves, but against the devil in others, never succeed in making the world better, but leave it either as it was, or sometimes perceptibly worse than what it was, before the crusade began. By thinking primarily of evil we tend, however excellent our intentions, to create occasions for evil to manifest itself."
-- Aldous Huxley

"The only war that matters is the war against the imagination. All others are subsumed by it."
-- Diane DiPrima, "Rant", from Pieces of a Song.

"It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack
of what is found there"
-- William Carlos Williams, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower"
