Banksy: Putting the 'mp' in Chimps

A new Banksy exhibition opens in Bristol this weekend to run for three months, entitled Banksy vs the Bristol Museum. Famous for such memorable artworks as the bouquet-throwing resistance-fighter, the Portaloo StoneHenge and nicely dissonant role-reversals, Banksy is perhaps best known for his stencils-based graffiti that has appeared around the world, including in Palestine. This is one of his latest works, about which Banksy has quipped: “You paint a hundred chimpanzees and they call you a guerrilla artist.”

UPDATE

Jools Moore of Naked Ape Public Relations has written to us to invite readers to be in the running for a Banksy print at HangUp Pictures…? Jools writes: there’s a little viral movie starring Agent Provocateur’s Jen Dawson on the comp page for those interested (which you need to watch to enter the comp!). If it’s your bag you can download the video from here: http://www.naked-ape.co.uk/press/hangup/

Banksy is such a great piss-taking artist! I love the stencils and the satire.

Timely Reminders

"Those who crusade, not for God in themselves, but against the devil in others, never succeed in making the world better, but leave it either as it was, or sometimes perceptibly worse than what it was, before the crusade began. By thinking primarily of evil we tend, however excellent our intentions, to create occasions for evil to manifest itself."
-- Aldous Huxley

"The only war that matters is the war against the imagination. All others are subsumed by it."
-- Diane DiPrima, "Rant", from Pieces of a Song.

"It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack
of what is found there"
-- William Carlos Williams, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower"
