Hi Ann …
I know this is off topic, but I was just reading Robert Fisk’s latest piece for the Independent, and I couldn’t help wonder: Do you have an approximate figure for the number of Palestinians that have been killed and displaced (or both) since 1948?
Again, sorry if this is not related to the post … You were my best bet for an answer.
Hi Pedestrian,
Thanks for coming by. In terms of expulsion, a conservative figure for Dec 1947 to March 1949 of those ethnically ‘cleansed’ by Israel are around three quarters of a million Palestinians.
In the seven months between Oct 1948 and March 1949 Israeli emigre historian Ilan Pappe details how five hundred and thirty one villages were destroyed and eleven urban neighborhoods emptied. “The mass expulsion,” he writes, “was accompanied by massacres, rape and imprisonment of men”.
Regarding the number of deaths, I can readily offer 2000-2008 figures but the total number since 1948 merits more time and research. There was a long-time ratio of 1:4 deaths between 2000 and 2008 (Israelis to Palestinians) but that grim ratio of death is even more lopsided now (as horrendous as any death is).
So, between 2000 and 2008, the numbers of Palestinians killed (and innumerably more injured, and excluding this current conflagration), is around 5000 going by an If Americans Knew compilation. See their site for more: http://ifamericansknew.org/
