Duty calls

I hope some of us get a laugh of recognition from this cartoon, as I did. Hat-tip to Monte who clipped it at xkcd.

Addendum: An observant reader has noted that there is an additional message when you mouse-over the cartoon. It is: “What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they’ll keep being wrong!”

    Everyman, the blogger.

  2. peoplesgeography Says:

Incidentally also fits in nicely with the phrase, Everyman and his blog, gender specificity notwithstanding :)

Holy Jeebus. Monte’s a sexist? Never occurred to me.

Is there any sanctuary from politically correct language remodelling?

If we spent half as much time on that vision thing as we do on crafting identity-based sensitivities in the language, which we all inherited through no fault of our own, what kind of world could we build?

There’s no one here but us, using tools we have around the house – clanky old language gotcha’s notwithstanding. Maybe when we start using Trek star dates as a civilization we’ll have worked out that it’s alright to respond smartly “Yes, Sir” to the female captain.

  4. peoplesgeography.com Says:

Hey hey hey, starcrew Monte hasn’t been accused of sexism, it was just a side note about semantic exclusion.

Crafting identity-based sensitivities? This craftsperson doesn’t know what you could mean!

I’ll duel you in the Holodeck, Officer.

    :P

  5. Kilroy Says:

I’ll meet you on Risa for Batleths at the beach :P

Wrong ideas must be debated all the way to hell.

The bed and its occupants can wait. :P

  8. peoplesgeography.com Says:

And I thought revolutionaries were supposed to be romantic

    (sigh)

    … :)

  9. peoplesgeography Says:

  10. Crimson East Says:

Bah, they don’t have time for decadent tomfoolery like “romance”, Ann. :P
They have far better things to do with their time.

In fact, I think I can write a poem about it straight away. I know people are going to hate me for this, but here we go…

    Revolutionaries…
    They don’t get paid,
    They don’t get laid.
(The latter being a natural consequence of the former)

    They drink a Molotov cocktail
    Lest their courage fail…
    While they sit in jail,
    Without bail.

They live on the barricade, yo!
They die on the barricade, ho!

  11. peoplesgeography.com Says:

:D Thanks for the great chuckle, Ziyad, especially since the supreme and delicious irony is that you disagreed with the proposition that revolutionaries can be romantic through poetry: the quintessential romantic medium.

Just marvelous. This is worthy of Subcomandante Marcos, who happens to be my very favourite contemporary poetic anti-revolutionary revolutionary. ;)

  12. Crimson East Says:

Well Ann, I can use your own reasoning to prove you wrong.

As you say, poetry = romance.
And as we know, my poetry = crap,
Therefore my romance is also crappy,
Therefore I am a bad romantic,
And a bad romantic is not a romantic,
Therefore I am not a romantic.

Therefore, someone is wrong on the internet again, and its not me. :P

But I can take my time, because the only thing that awaits me in bed is a mass of scattered notes and assignments. :(
