Peoples Geography — Reclaiming space

Creating people's geographies

How well do you know your Middle East geography?

Can’t See the Forest has posted a great Middle East and North Africa “pin the tag on the country” interactive link. Check it out and have a go with testing your ability. Curt’s own success is in typically stark contrast to “George-ography” (yes I know I’ve been satirising Dubya’s lack of worldly knowledge of late, c’mon, its a US and worldwide sport — no reflection upon dear American friends) and Curt did better than I did, I think (I needed 2 goes with some countries). I only teach geography!

Had trouble with a few of the “stans” and the small Gulf States. I’ve loved maps since I was a kid, amazes me how ignorant of even basic geography most people are. Hell, I knew a Navy pilot who could get lost looking for the bathroom, it did not fill me with confidence. Thanks —Doug

:D Like your Navy friend, I’m hopeless at directions sometimes. I go by the female tendency to “go by landmarks” rather than distances. Glad you enjoyed it.

Let’s just say that I happen to be an exceptional student of remedial geography.
    Harumph.

Timely Reminders

"Those who crusade, not for God in themselves, but against the devil in others, never succeed in making the world better, but leave it either as it was, or sometimes perceptibly worse than what it was, before the crusade began. By thinking primarily of evil we tend, however excellent our intentions, to create occasions for evil to manifest itself."
-- Aldous Huxley

"The only war that matters is the war against the imagination. All others are subsumed by it."
-- Diane DiPrima, "Rant", from Pieces of a Song.

"It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack
of what is found there"
-- William Carlos Williams, "Asphodel, That Greeny Flower"
