The establishment will survive by transforming from public house to members’ club. They’d happily make us members at the door on our next visit, for a fee less than some clubs charge just for entry. That’s definitely a good thing. We British know how important a social space the pub can be; outlawing the Muslim equivalent would have had such a devastating effect on community relations and cohesion that I started to suspect that was the whole point of the smoking ban.
